How to wash sleep shorts without losing their shape

Decide whether the pair is ready for the wash

Inspect the shorts before adding them to a load. Empty the pockets, check for an untied or partly withdrawn drawstring and look for loose stitching that could worsen during handling. A small existing tear is a repair question, not something to hide inside a gentle cycle. Set aside a garment needing attention so that ordinary laundry does not become the moment you discover a larger opening.

Manage pockets, fasteners and drawstrings before water

Check inside each pocket with your hand. Tissue, receipts, keys and small objects are easier to remove now than after a wash. Turn out a pocket only if its construction allows it without pulling on the seam. Examine the pocket mouth for a caught thread or loose corner, particularly if the shorts are often used for lounging with a phone.

Follow any fastening directions supplied by the maker. For a functional drawstring, arrange the ends so they are not hanging in long loose loops; a loose bow may help keep a free-running cord from disappearing if the construction allows it. Do not cinch the waistband tightly or create a hard knot that you will need to pull against the fabric afterward. A decorative tie should be handled as trim, not assumed to adjust or withdraw.

A laundry bag can keep a permitted machine-washable pair contained and separate loose details from other items. Choose enough room for the garment to move as intended and follow the bag and appliance instructions. A bag does not change a hand-wash-only label into machine-wash permission, and it does not make incompatible fasteners elsewhere in the load harmless.

Turning shorts inside out may be a practical preparation step when consistent with their instructions, especially if you want the outer surface less exposed to other garments. Choose the program from its description, not its nickname

Measure the detergent according to its instructions for the actual load and machine. More product is not a way to compensate for choosing the wrong process.
